As a result there is increasing attention to adapting treatment programs that address mood and anxiety challenges for autistic individuals. However\, more attention is needed to the many ways we can promote mental health before psychological treatment is needed. This presentation will propose a three-tiered prevention model to frame mental health supports for autistic individuals. Dr. Bal will provide examples of approaches to promote well-being\, mitigate stress and identify mental health problems early\, as well as treat clinically significant depression or anxiety in autistic individuals. Implications for supporting mental health across the age and ability range will also be discussed. \nEli Newcomb The Faison Center \n“Lessons from the Field: A Decade of OBM Research on Staff Training and Performance Management” \nHuman service organizations routinely encounter personnel-related challenges: hiring direct care staff with job-ready skills\, finding enough time to adequately train staff\, keeping staff motivated and performing well\, and retaining them. This talk examines these challenges in depth and presents related\, solutions-focused research conducted over the last decade within a human service organization that provides specialized education\, behavior-analytic\, and adult services for individuals with developmental disabilities. Detecting the source(s) of a performance problem; devising systems to engage\, motivate\, and maintain employee performance; and weighing the economics of training will be highlighted. Attendees will leave with a practical framework for distinguishing training problems from those that originate with lapses of reinforcement and feedback\, and with concrete\, field-tested approaches for generating staff engagement and for building and sustaining performance. \nGriffin Rooker\, Ph.D.\, BCBA\, LBA Mount St. Mary’s University \n“Why Does Self-Injury Happen? A Bio-Behavioral Approach to Assessment and Treatment” \nSelf-injurious behavior is one of the most serious and distressing challenges families and clinicians face\, and it can feel impossible to understand why a person would hurt themselves. This talk offers a framework for making sense of it. The current lecture focuses on defining self-injurious behavior and describing how common and how consequential it can be for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Additionally\, this lecture aims to examine different ways of explaining why self-injury occurs: one rooted in how the surrounding environment can unintentionally support the behavior\, and one rooted in biology. Rather than treating these as competing explanations\, participants will see how they work together\, and why identifying the specific reason a behavior happens is the key to choosing an effective treatment. Drawing on both classic research and my own work\, including studies of sensory perception and the relationship between the function of self-injury and the injuries it produces\, we will discuss how individualized assessment leads to safer and more successful intervention. Parents and providers will leave with a clearer way to think about self-injury and a sense of what good assessment and treatment should look like. \nBruce Tinor\, Ph.D.\, BCBAPennsylvania Public Schools \n “The Role of the BCBA in Strengthening Collaborative Partnerships Across Service Settings” \nBoard Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) collaborate with educators\, caregivers\, direct support professionals\, and interdisciplinary teams across school\, home\, clinic\, and adult service settings to improve meaningful outcomes for individuals receiving behavior-analytic services. Effective collaboration is essential for promoting treatment integrity\, consistency\, and sustainable behavior change. This presentation examines the role of the BCBA and common systemic and communication barriers that impact interdisciplinary partnerships. Drawing on behavior-analytic principles\, participants will learn practical\, evidence-based strategies to strengthen collaboration\, increase stakeholder engagement\, and improve client outcomes across service settings. By the conclusion of this presentation\, participants will be able to: \n1. Describe the role and scope of practice of the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and identify common barriers that affect collaboration across school\, home\, clinic\, and adult service settings. \n2. DESCRIPTION:Fifty years ago\, a small group of parents came together in search of a better life for their children with autism. During an era when few had even heard of autism\, these parents set out to create\, fund\, and advance autism services. In 1975\, thanks to the tenacity and determination of these parents and early staff\, Eden Autism was born. \nFrom working out of a Princeton church basement to expanding into residential and senior services\, Eden’s history is as unique and wonderful as the participants we serve. With Stewart Films\, we set out to capture this history in an updated documentary\, “50 Years of Transforming Lives\, Building Futures.” \nJoin us Saturday\, November 15 for the film watch party! The Eden School will be transformed into a movie theater. Come walk the red carpet and enjoy a pre-movie reception featuring hors d’oeuvres\, beer\, and wine. If you believe that an Eden employee is conducting themselves in an unethical manner or is violating federal or state laws\, please call the hotline to report your concern. \nPurpose\nThe Hotline is designed to be an alternative to reporting concerns about potential violations by Eden\, or its staff\, of any federal or state laws or Eden policies or procedures in person. Calls to the Hotline are confidential. If you choose not to provide your contact information\, no one at Eden will be able to follow up with you directly. If you would like Eden to follow up with you\, please provide your contact information such as a phone number or email address. \nHours\nThe Compliance Hotline is open 24 hours a day\, 7 days a week. When you call 609-362-9330\, you will be directed to a voice mailbox where you may leave a message about your concern. Eden staff does not answer this telephone line; it goes directly to voice mail. Designated Compliance Staff then receive an alert and begin the process of disseminating the information accordingly. \nCallers should be sure to provide details about their concern. Your name and other identifying information is not necessary unless you would like the Compliance Staff to follow up with you. \nTypes of Concern\nPlease tell us about any suspected improper or unethical activity\, such as: \n\nViolations of and/or mismanagement of federal\, state\, or local funds;\nFraudulent billing or coding;\nViolations of Medicaid rules or participant privacy;\nConflicts of interest.\n\nThis list is not meant to be all encompassing.
