When Rhonda Burgess received her 25-year award at this year’s Service Awards ceremony, Michael B. walked up to the spotlight to congratulate her in front of everyone. He wanted everyone in attendance to know that he was proud of his longtime Senior Direct Support Professional.

Rhonda has worked with the residents of Dempsey Apartment, Michael and Antonio, for the better part of her Eden career. She has been with them through challenging behaviors and COVID-related shutdowns. She has helped them learn new skills and seen them increase their independence.

Michael and Antonio have a say in all activities and trips Rhonda plans. “Every month we have a house meeting,” said Rhonda. “I ask what do you want to do this month, where do you want to go out to eat. For vacations, Michael gets to decide where we go one year, and then Antonio decides the next year. I make sure they both feel comfortable with the plans they make. We are a team; it’s like a family.”

Bowling, shopping, and exercising are top picks for weekly activities. Vacations have included everything from Cape May to Disney World. The apartment is neat and tidy, thanks to both Michael and Antonio. The roommates both enjoy a clean space, and they love decorating for each holiday and season.

“It’s their home, and I want them to feel comfortable,” said Rhonda. “I never tell them ‘you have to do this or that’ without explaining to them why. They are very independent.”

Rhonda is thrilled to see how far Antonio and Michael have come. “When I started, they would have behaviors, and it was challenging, but I would just work with them,” she said. She taught them to tell her or another staff member if they are overwhelmed and need space. And by explaining why they are going to new places before they arrive, they can better prepare themselves and enjoy the activities.

“They’re really good guys, and they have grown so much. I respect them, and they respect me,” said Rhonda.

Being able to work with Michael and Antonio is a big reason why Rhonda has stayed with Eden for 25 years. A retired correctional officer, Rhonda found her second calling at Eden. “It makes me feel great that if I don’t do anything else in this world, I did something for autistic adults. I changed their lives. I helped them grow, helped them learn how to enjoy being with other people, how to communicate and enjoy life,” said Rhonda. “That’s all I want for them, to enjoy life.”

Rhonda’s love does not go unnoticed by the residents of Dempsey Apartment. “She takes care of us,” said Michael.
