Sharon is Eden's dance and karaoke queen! From the Sharon is Eden's dance and karaoke queen! From the Beatles and Tony Benet to Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Whitney Houston, and anyone in between, Sharon lights up when she hears her favorite music.

Sharon recently celebrated her birthday, and the theme was “Groovy since ’61!”

At 64, Sharon hasn’t slowed down. She spends her days volunteering at Meals on Wheels and Bridge Church. This year, she will join a Special Olympics Bowling Team, her first time competing in the sport.

Knowing that Sharon has been cared for and loved by Eden staff for decades is reassuring for her sister Nan, who now lives in a different state.

“They have her best interest at heart,” said Nan. “I awake every morning and go to sleep each night thanking above for Eden and everyone there. I don’t know where we would be without them. I don’t know where Sharon would be. It has given her a life. The connections she has, the activities she has, and the people that are part of her life, it’s invaluable.”

Teaching Assistant Amanda Edwards wants everyone t Teaching Assistant Amanda Edwards wants everyone to know how capable her students are.

“Sometimes people don’t think they’re capable of a lot, but then you really work with them day-to-day, and you see how much they can do,” she said.

“From September to June, over the course of a school year, there is so much progress. Maybe they mastered shirt dressing, or now they know all their letters. It’s cool to see where they started and where they are now.”

Amanda works in the Early classroom. Working with some of the Eden School’s youngest students, all of her work is very hands-on.

“I also work in [Extended Day Program] EDP, and it’s cool to see the older kids be more independent,” she said. “It’s why we’re so hands-on, so when they go to the classrooms upstairs, they can be more independent because they worked on those skills in Early.”

EDP is an after-school program that offers students the opportunity to engage in community activities with teachers and peers.

Community engagement is a vital part of education at Eden. A simple trip to the bowling alley can be an opportunity to use the skills they learned at school — asking a worker for their bowling shoes, interacting with their peers and individuals at the bowling alley, asking teachers for help, and communicating what they want or need.

And of course, all of these skills are used while having fun after school with their friends!

“Those simple, tiny little achievements that would mean nothing to so many people, but it means so much to our kids,” she said.

As a Head Teacher at the Eden School, she sees firsthand how everyone at Eden comes together to support the students to help them through challenges and celebrate their successes.

“From a teaching standpoint, it’s encouraging to know that in areas where I have less education, there are other professionals here that I can go to for help,” she said. “Areas like clinical, speech, and medical. Everyone is here in the building and wants to help.”
