Alexis Kate Special Education Teacher’s Scholarship

The Alexis Kate Special Education Teacher’s Scholarship is a two-fold $1,000 scholarship awarded annually to two worthy Morris County School of Technology students in their senior year. The first $500 scholarship will be awarded to a student in the Education and Learning Academy who has expressed a dedication to focus on special education in their teaching career. The second $500 scholarship will be awarded to a senior who is classified as eligible, and has taken advantage of, special education and support services at MCST based on the Individual with Disabilities Education Act. Applicants must be a student at Morris County School of Technology with a set plan to attend college after graduation.

This award was made possible through the fund-raising efforts of Steve Nelson whose niece, Alexis Kate, was diagnosed with autism at 17 months of age and subsequently received early intervention services through Eden’s infant and toddler program. Mr. Nelson rode his bike 1,800 miles from New Jersey to-Florida in order to raise money to create an endowed scholarship fund for students planning special education careers. Thanks to Mr. Nelson's efforts, a new student is selected to receive the scholarship every year.
