Alexis Kate Special Education Teacher’s Scholarship
The Alexis Kate Special Education Teacher’s Scholarship is a $750 scholarship awarded to a worthy college student, in their sophomore year or beyond, who has declared a special education major and has also demonstrated extracurricular commitment to the field. Graduate students in the field of special education are also eligible to apply. Applicants must be a resident of New Jersey and enrolled in a New Jersey college or university.
This award was made possible through the fund-raising efforts of Steve Nelson whose niece, Alexis Kate, was diagnosed with autism at 17 months of age and subsequently received early intervention services through Eden’s infant and toddler program. Mr. Nelson rode his bike 1,800 miles from New Jersey to-Florida in order to raise money to create an endowed scholarship fund for students planning special education careers. Thanks to Mr. Nelson's efforts, a new student is selected to receive the scholarship every year.
